Emergency Dental Care: How To Deal With a Dental Emergency

Emergency dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals with urgent conditions requiring immediate attention. These emergencies can include toothaches, broken teeth, and fractured jaws, among other things. If you find yourself in need of emergency dental care, it’s important to know what your next steps should be.

The first step in dealing with a dental emergency is determining what type of emergency it is. There are four main types of dental emergencies:

  1. Toothache

  2. Broken tooth or crown

  3. Dental abscess

  4. Lost/broken/chipped teeth

Toothache: The most common type of dental emergency. It can be caused by a number of things, such as a cavity or an infection.

Broken Crown: A crown is an artificial tooth covering an existing dead or broken tooth, and it can become unglued and easily fall out if the crown is old.

Dental Abscess: A dental abscess is a pus-filled sac that forms in response to infection. It can be caused by many things, including tooth decay or a broken tooth.

Lost/Broken/Chipped Tooth: Caused by anything from a sports injury to a fall.

What To Do In Case Of A Dental Emergency?

The first step should always be calling your dentist or going to the emergency room if necessary. After that, there are some things that you can do at home:

Toothache: If your toothache isn’t too severe and doesn’t involve any bleeding, you can try to relieve the pain by using over-the-counter painkillers. You can also place an ice pack on the outside of your face or rinse with saltwater.

Broken Crown: If you have a broken crown or if your crown has fallen off, it is important not to remove any pieces that are still in your mouth. Try to save any pieces that have come off and bring them with you to your appointment. You can also place the tooth or crown in a cup of milk if you can’t get to your dentist right away.

Dental Abscess: If you are experiencing a dental abscess, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. If you can’t get into your dentist, visit a medical clinic or the Emergency Room. If none of these options are available to you, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and try not to swallow it.

Lost/Broken/Chipped Tooth: If you have lost a tooth, you should see your dentist as soon as possible so that they can put in a temporary filling if necessary. You should also try not to eat with the missing tooth until you resolve the situation because this could cause more damage and pain.

Cost Of Emergency Dental Care

The cost of emergency dental care can vary depending on the type of emergency and the dentist you go to. Generally, however, it is more expensive than a regular dental appointment.

The Alberta Dental Fee Guide outlines the cost of emergency dental care for each procedure.

We would start with an exam and x-ray (approximately $100) and then quote on what treatment would be necessary.

Finding The Right Emergency Dentist

When you have a dental emergency, it's important to find the right dentist. Not all dentists offer emergency care, so you may need to go to a special clinic or hospital.

There are a few ways to find an emergency dentist. You can call your regular dentist and ask for a referral, or you can search online directories or websites. You can try searching "emergency dentistry in NW Calgary" when looking for clinics that are open for acute dental emergencies.

When you're looking for an emergency dentist, be sure to check the cost of services. Some dentists may charge more for emergency care than others. Also, be sure to ask about the dentist's availability. Many emergency clinics only offer limited hours, so you may need to call ahead.
